How many pies in the face does it take to make the target look like she/he's fully "gotten it"?

I mean - does one pie do the trick...is a barrage of 15 funnier than four in rapid succession? I read once that each clown in the act gets it once but the ringmaster/straightface is supposed to get hit with like seven pies. I wonder what people think...
