Is it legal to throw pebble rocks in the trash? LOTS of pebble rocks?

The back yard of the house i recently purchased is about half full of pebble rocks and i want to get rid of them adn put sod down. Is it okay to just throw them in the trash can? it would take a couple grabage pick up days to get rid of them all but i am wondering if the trash man will pick them up.
