Possible without a plane?

Okay, so, I've wanted to go China/Korea/Japan way for a while now, but I absolutely detest planes, even short little rides. There is no way I could stay on one for around or upwards of the 10-hour flight it'd take (in fact, I don't think I could get on one at ALL). So my question is: would it be possible to get as far as Japan in a REASONABLE amount of time and for a reasonable cost, just by using trains, coaches and boats? How long would it take? And what papers etc. would be needed? I don't plan to go for quite a long while yet, but I'd like to know.
